Used buying guide · Small van · micro campers

The Caddy is a well-built small van and a favourite for micro campers and day vans. It is generally reliable, but there are a few issues to check on used examples.

This guide covers the VW Caddy problems owners report most often on used vans and campervans, what each one looks like on a viewing and what to ask the seller. Not every van will have them. But knowing where to look stops you paying for someone else’s repair bill.

The 2022-on Ford Transit Connect is built on the Caddy, so the newest Connects share its faults.

What goes wrong on a used VW Caddy

1. DSG gearbox judder

Caddys with the 7-speed DSG automatic can suffer judder, hesitation and jerky low-speed changes caused by mechatronic or clutch wear. Test it in slow traffic and on a hill start.

2. EGR cooler and DPF on 1.6 and 2.0 TDI

These engines can suffer EGR cooler failures and blocked DPFs on vans used for short trips. Look for warning lights and coolant loss.

3. Emissions recall on 2.0 TDI vans

Some 2.0 TDI Caddys were part of VW’s emissions recall. Check the recall work has been done, as it can affect the EGR and fuel economy.

4. Dual-mass flywheel noise

Diesel Caddys often need a new clutch and dual-mass flywheel by high mileage. Listen for a rattle at idle that disappears when you press the clutch.

5. Rear suspension and payload

Micro-camper conversions add weight to a small van. Check the rear springs are not sagging and that the conversion leaves enough payload for people and gear.

Our tip: Make sure the conversion has not covered up the original seat belt mounts or rear seat fixings without proper paperwork.

These are problems commonly reported by owners, garages and the motoring press. They are not a diagnosis of any particular van. A van with a full service history and the right repairs already done can be a very good buy.

Checking the conversion as well as the van

On a campervan or motorhome, the living area can cost as much to put right as the engine. However good the base vehicle is, check these before you buy:

  • Damp readings around windows, rooflights, lockers and the floor. Damp is the most expensive hidden problem in a camper.
  • Gas appliances light and work, and the regulator hose is in date.
  • Leisure battery, 12V system and mains hook-up all work and look professionally installed.
  • Water pump, taps and tanks do not leak.
  • Any added seats have proper fixings and belts, and the V5C body type matches the conversion for insurance.
  • A pop-top or high-top roof does not leak, and the mechanism works.

Before you pay for a used VW Caddy

  1. Check the history. Run the free MOT history check online and look for mileage gaps and repeat advisories. Pay for a full history check for finance, theft and write-off markers.
  2. Match the paperwork. The seller’s ID, the V5C and the VIN on the van should all match. Be wary of a seller who is selling for someone else.
  3. See it running from cold. Ask the seller not to start it before you arrive. Many faults show up in the first few minutes.
  4. Never send a deposit unseen. Pay only at handover, by bank transfer, once you have the keys and the V5C.

Questions about buying a VW Caddy

What are the most common problems with a used VW Caddy?

The problems reported most often are: DSG gearbox judder; EGR cooler and DPF on 1.6 and 2.0 TDI; Emissions recall on 2.0 TDI vans; Dual-mass flywheel noise; and Rear suspension and payload. Not every van will have them, so check the service history and see the van running from cold.

Is a VW Caddy a good base for a campervan?

It can be. VW Caddy vans are widely used for micro campers. The best buys have a full service history, a professionally fitted conversion and no damp in the living area.

Can SafeBuy check a VW Caddy before I buy it?

Yes. We view the van for you, check the seller and paperwork, walk you round it on a live video call and can test the living area with our Habitation Check. Prices start at £149 plus travel.
