Free MOT history check

Check a van before you travel to see it

Pop in the registration from the advert. We pull the DVSA’s MOT records and flag anything that needs a closer look: mileage that goes backwards, long gaps off the road, rust and problems that keep coming back.

Free check of the DVSA’s MOT records: mileage, gaps, failures and advisories.

What the check looks for

Four things we flag from the MOT history

1

Mileage that goes backwards

We line up every recorded reading. A drop can mean clocking, a swapped dashboard or a tester typo, and it’s worth asking about.

2

Long gaps off the road

Months without an MOT usually means storage or SORN. Vans that stand still can hide damp, seized brakes and perished seals.

3

Rust and repeat faults

Corrosion on the chassis or floor, and brakes, suspension or leaks that come up test after test.

4

Fails and advisories

Dangerous and major defects, and the advisories from the last test that you’ll want budget for.

Before you pay

What an MOT history can’t tell you

A clean MOT record is a good start, but it’s only part of the story. It can’t show you:

  • Damp and leaks in the habitation area
  • Whether the seller is the registered keeper on the V5C
  • Outstanding finance, theft or insurance write-offs
  • The condition of the van today, not just on test day

That’s what a SafeBuy viewing is for. We go and see the van, check the seller and the paperwork, and you watch it all on a live video call before any money moves.
