Used buying guide · Small van · micro campers
The Transit Connect is a common choice for small micro-camper conversions that can still be used as a daily car. Faults depend heavily on which engine and generation the van has.
This guide covers the Ford Transit Connect problems owners report most often on used vans and campervans, what each one looks like on a viewing and what to ask the seller. Not every van will have them. But knowing where to look stops you paying for someone else’s repair bill.
Engines you’ll find: 1.8 TDCi (2002-2013), 1.5 and 1.6 TDCi and 1.0 EcoBoost (2013-2022), 2.0 TDI (2022 on)
From 2022 the Transit Connect is built on the VW Caddy, so the Caddy guide applies to the newest vans.
Common problems on a used Ford Transit Connect
1. Turbo failure on 1.6 TDCi engines
The 1.6 TDCi is known for turbo failures, often caused by carbon blocking the turbo’s oil supply. Listen for whistling, look for blue smoke and check how often the oil has been changed.
2. Injector problems on 1.8 TDCi vans
The 1.8 TDCi can suffer injector faults that cause rough running, smoke and hard starting. Ask about any injector replacement.
3. Rust on older vans
2002-2013 Connects rust on the sills, rear arches, door bottoms and around the sliding doors. Push gently on any bubbles to see how deep they go.
4. DPF clogging
Later diesel vans used for short trips clog their DPF. Warning lights or a van that keeps running its fan after switching off are signs of repeated regeneration.
5. Clutch wear
Small vans used around town wear their clutches quickly. Check where the clutch bites and whether it slips in a high gear.
Our tip: A micro camper still has to carry the conversion, people and luggage. Check the payload on the plate before you buy.
These are problems commonly reported by owners, garages and the motoring press. They are not a diagnosis of any particular van. A van with a full service history and the right repairs already done can be a very good buy.
Checking the conversion as well as the van
On a campervan or motorhome, the living area can cost as much to put right as the engine. Whatever the base vehicle, check these before you buy:
- Damp readings around windows, rooflights, lockers and the floor. Damp is the most expensive hidden problem in a camper.
- Gas appliances light and work, and the regulator hose is in date.
- Leisure battery, 12V system and mains hook-up all work and look professionally installed.
- Water pump, taps and tanks do not leak.
- Any added seats have proper fixings and belts, and the V5C body type matches the conversion for insurance.
- A pop-top or high-top roof does not leak, and the mechanism works.
Before you pay for a used Ford Transit Connect
- Check the history. Run the free MOT history check online and look for mileage gaps and repeat advisories. Pay for a full history check for finance, theft and write-off markers.
- Match the paperwork. The seller’s ID, the V5C and the VIN on the van should all match. Be wary of a seller who is selling for someone else.
- See it running from cold. Ask the seller not to start it before you arrive. Many faults show up in the first few minutes.
- Never send a deposit unseen. Pay only at handover, by bank transfer, once you have the keys and the V5C.
